The Plastiki looks similar to many other boats in Sydney harbour. It's eighteen metres long, six metres wide and it weighs about twelve thousand kilogrammes. The number of people accessing the State’s and community’s priority policies and programmes is increasing, said Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung. Vietnam has around 6.2 million people over the age of two with disabilities, making up 7.06 per cent of the country’s population. Attending the event, Truong Thi Mai, head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Mass Mobilisation, said besides the achievements, Vietnam still sees many obstacles. Infrastructure is still limited in demand for people with disabilities and many life below the poverty line depending heavily on their families.
Mai asked organisations to improve education to raise people’s awareness of the meaning of supportive work to people with disabilities. This year, more than VNĐ17 trillion (US$735.4 million) from the State budget was allocated to provinces and cities to implement policies for people with disabilities, according to the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs.
The Ministry of Planning and Investment on Thursday launched the programme “White stick for Vietnamese visual impaired people”. Its aim is to present one million white sticks to visually impaired people across the country. Training to use the device will also be provided. Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung said the ministry will listen to disabled people’s demands and wishes and put them into its policies. You may end up sleeping on the couch or the floor, but the advantages outweigh the discomfort. The biggest plus is that you’ll be staying with a local and seeing the city from a local perspective.
Another option is house-swapping. Several websites allow you to connect with people who want to trade living situations. It’s usual to exchange emails about favorite places in the city before the swap, meaning you can have a truly local experience. But of course, you can only do this if you don’t mind having strangers staying in your house.
For the more adventurous, staying in a native structure in an African village or a hut on the water in Vietnam or Thailand can be a real thrill. These might not even include plumbing or electricity, and that is part of the charm. The experience of dealing with oil lamps and carrying water really gives you a sense of how the people live.
No matter how unadventurous you feel, you might want to consider crossing hotels off your list. Getting to know the local way of life is most valuable part of travel. And what better way is there to do this than staying where the local people actually live?
